According to the SensorTower report, Instagram has taken the lead in the number of downloads among other applications. TikTok has been number one in download rankings for a long time, but Instagram managed to beat it by a significant margin. The data is for the last quarter of 2021.
Instagram Has Overtaken Tiktok
Super-popular video-sharing app TikTok is rapidly spreading its influence and expanding the audience that attracts users of different ages. Along with the short video format, TikTok continues to push its position as the most successful application in the number of installations. But a recent video event in the quarterly report knocked down TikTok’s top strick and put Instagram in the top overall most downloaded apps.
It is most likely that TikTok has lost its crown due to the recent media events in India and the new Instagram update. India banned TikTok, and it was one of the largest markets for the platform, so its ban resulted in a severe loss in TikTok's user base. Instagram, in turn, launched a new Reels feature that was an attempt to compete with TikTok's short video format.
Will Instagram Be Able To Stay On Top?
The next quarter of this year is intriguing as to whether Instagram will remain in the lead or give up its place back to TikTok, which has held the crown for a reason all this time. It's not the first time TikTok has lost the top spot in years as Zoom became the most downloaded app in the second quarter of 2020. Despite this, Instagram will have a hard time fighting for first place.
Sensor Tower also noted that Instagram had increased its download statistics in India by 135% between the second quarter of 2020 and the last quarter of the previous year. Instagram continues to become increasingly popular in the Asian market, with TikTok maintaining its position in the European market. How will Instagram perform in the upcoming quarter?
