Google & Apple Eliminate Rivalry?

A Comscore’s study shows that two tech-giants enjoy crushing competing apps.

Analytical company Comscore published a new study financed by Facebook. It shows that Apple and Google practice foul play when it comes to third-party apps.

People have been discussing for years how these two tech-moguls treat their rivals unfairly by promoting their own preinstalled apps. But Comscore’s investigation is the first attempt to gather evidence on this unethical behavior.

Exclusively shared with the Verge, the investigation shows that the biggest part of the most popular apps — 75% for Apple and 60% for Google — are the preinstalled ones.

Previously, both Big tech corps were reluctant to disclose how many people use their native apps. Comscore analyzed the download statistics, as well as held a massive survey with 4,000 participants.

The research roughly coincides with the new bills introduced by the Democratic senators.

These bills are aimed at the invisible monopoly set by the Big Tech, which sabotages fair competition according to the antitrust advocates.

Apple has been getting more and more monopoly accusations, especially in the light of the Fortnite ban.

Deezer, Spotify, Blockchain.com and other companies even decided to unite their forces as Coalition for App Fairness, which strives to combat “anti-competitive policies”. According to them, Apples makes $15 billions every year from AIP commissions alone.

It seems, we’re about to witness a new epoch, in which Big Tech will lose some of its clout. Even though Apple denies accuracy of the research, law-makers seem adamant about intervening.

As Rep. David Cicilline said about the tech giants: “They are in a unique position to pick winners and losers, destroy small businesses, raise prices on consumers, and put folks out of work”.
